About Antonella
I won't tell you the story of the Venetian mask, of how it was born, when, and why....
I think that by now its origins are fairly well known. I would like to tell you
how the idea of creating these "objects" that are so dear to me, was born within
me ....
My passion for masks has grown steadily in me and I have wanted to make
them for a very long time. My creations are a mix of emotions, of ideas and materials
taken from nature, of the things that surround me, of what I'm offered by my beautiful
city: VENICE! - Venezia. A fascinating city full of mystery, culture and history.
I walk its
streets, past ancient and majestic palaces, at each step I feel emotion and inspiration,
giving me ideas for new creations....the water flowing slowly and silently through
the canals, a pitching gondola touched by Sirocco winds, a gull in flight in the
starry sky of a winter's night... then I transfer all of this to faces of papier
mâché which I cover with gold leaf: (representing) the light that emanates from
Venice every day of the year.
...I decorate it with hand-printed silk velvet: the
embracing warmth that welcomes you to this splendid city....I decorate it with glass
beads, Swarovski crystals, trimmings: the splendid views that this noble old lady
shows of herself.... feathers, lace, flowers, all symbols of wealth and magnificence
are part of my creations. But even recycled paper, tree twigs, shells, plain and
discarded materials; I use them to decorate my mask .....
My styles are multiple:
classic, baroque, modern, such as those that adorn "the pearl of the Adriatic, the
salon of the world".
Venetian legends and stories of ghosts inspire my horror masks:
unique pieces, scary or funny.... from my hands come these "small pieces of art"
which fill me with the satisfaction to have been born, to live and to work in a
city that is a natural stage of art, culture, and of course, fun! Discover the pages
of my site tell me whether I haven't been too modest in telling you about my creations
and my city..... antonella
